Motivational Monday #15

Rudy just found out that he only made the Notre Dame Football Team’s practice squad and wouldn’t be allowed to dress in the uniform or play in actual games. The discouraging news made Rudy think twice about his lifelong dream of becoming a Notre Dame Football player – even after everything he’d already accomplished…

If I had to pick just one, I’d say this is probably my favorite scene from the movie, Rudy, which is based on a true story.

Tony Robbins once said, “It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.”

I absolutely love this scene because it perfectly exemplifies the moment of decision that shaped Rudy’s destiny.

Right after experiencing the disappointment of not making the team, Rudy became his own worst enemy without even realizing it. He forgot about everything he’d already accomplished, focused on the negative influences of others, and allowed quitting to become an option.

Thank goodness the janitor stepped in to help him think through everything! Rudy Ruettiger went on to become one of the most famous graduates of Notre Dame – ever…

He was asked to suit up for the season’s final home game his senior year and play in the final kickoff. Rudy stayed in for the final play of the game and sacked the opposing quarterback for Notre Dame’s win! He was carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates – which has only happened to one other player in the history of Notre Dame football.

We’ve all had defining moments where we’re forced to choose between backing down in the face of adversity (aka quitting!) or persevering to reach an ultimate goal. If you’re working to make one of your dreams a reality, there will be lots of defining moments along the way.

In your next defining moment, I challenge you to take on the role of the janitor. Think through all of your talents and attributes rather than leaving your mind open to negative influences. Revisit your W-H-Y and picture yourself achieving whatever it is you’re after. Most importantly, do not allow yourself to think of quitting as an option!

How did you make it through your last defining moment of decision? I’d love to hear about it in the comments section below!

  • I remember for almost 6 months since i started internet marketing, i made only pennies.... I was going to give up but still continue to do what I was told....

Despite not seeing any results... I know one day, I will start making sales online... I continue to write articles and articles and .....

then something strange happened... Made my first $1000 a day.....

    and the rest is history...

Good Luck to all your adventures, press on and never give up!!

    You will make it!
  • For your bucket list: When you're in Austin, go to nearby Greene, Texas and two-step at Greene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas--if you don't know how, find the nearest "old lady"--she probably taught dance in her living room for years....
And as far as persistence, never quitting: go to vcrail.com, to see what I'm filming for a segment of my tv show's first episode this weekend--a ride on an old Pullman car and a dome car thru the snowy Sierras to Reno--TWO dreams with one stone--over 11 years of never giving up on this show dream,...and now it's a reality! All naysayers, step aside..."Steamer-Train coming thruuuu!"
P.S."Rudy" is one of my favorite inspirations of all time!
  • Matt you Rock! Thank you for all that you do man! We all have a few moments from time to time that when we make a decision it leaves a mark good or bad.....

I believe wholeheartedly that when we come to a crossroads that we step back ...measure the situation and rise from the ashes!
Quitting is not an option no matter how far we reach!
    Blessings

  • Hi Matt,

This may or may not be relevant, but everyone is working so hard, I thought a bit of humor would work right here.

    Minnesota Quarters Alert
    (Important)
Hang on to any of the new Minnesota Quarters you may acquire. They may be worth MUCH MORE than 25 cents! The US Mint announced today that it is recalling all of the Minnesota quarters that are part of its program featuring quarters from each state.

This action is being taken after numerous reports that the new quarters will not work in parking meters, toll booths, vending machines, pay phones or any other coin-operated devices.

The problem lies in the unique makeup of the Minnesota quarter, which was designed by a couple of Norwegian specialists, Sven and Ole. Apparently the duct tape holding the two dimes and the nickel together keeps jamming up the machines.

Maybe we all need to look at our problems once again in a gentle light. Humor can sometimes help us see the problem from a new perspective.

I love this scene. It's always the one I look forward to in the whole movie. And he gets rewarded for it. But the interesting thing is that's not the only defining moment for him in the movie. He keeps coming up against adversity after adversity and perseveres. He never stops until that one time he needed a little kick in the butt. Funny how a mentor can be someone you never expected.
I've had adversities and never let them stop me. I've watched as I was sure people were saying I was crazy behind my back as I kept talking about my dreams. I'm in the middle of a crazy one now, but I'll finish. There's no losing, only finishing or quitting!
  • I had a defining moment quite recently. I was training towards a profession in Education but experienced sum difficulties, real major problems . I decided to quit.
It may not be forever but its quite an hap- hazard. Can you help?
  • My defining moments come in cycles. The last one came to me about a week ago. The feelings of self doubt and the voice telling me to quit begun their attack once again.

I wrote my feels down in my journal, listened to a Jim Rohn audio program, meditated and just focussed on getting through the next few days.

Now I'm feeling better and back to peak performance.

Getting through many "defining moments" has strengthened me and caused me to dig deep within to know the strength I have. (Ultimately, God gets all the glory for holding me at my lowest points). I have made it a purpose in my mind and heart to "shift" my thinking when all natural circumstances and "forces" around me tell me to quit. I have a support system of friends and we "sharpen each others iron". Knowing that I have a purpose BIGGER than I even realize keeps me knowing that "quitting on anything" is not an option. I press on toward the prize I know is there. There is great reward not only for me but for those along the way that my life, being used, will speak to and cause a diffence! This is what gets me through those defining moments. Life is an adventure, I want to experience it all!

Bless you, Matt, and your family! Thank you for giving so much of yourself for others' benefit!
