Motivational Monday #18

With everything that’s going on in the world today, it’s so easy to begin to think “I am just one person so how can I really do anything to change this world for the better?”

Most people decide early on that as just one person, they really can’t do anything that will make a real impact on the world and they quit dreaming of how they can change the world (or in many cases, they quit dreaming all together!)

Unfortunately, what most people forget is that change in this world actually begins with just one person….

Alfred’s Story:  Why You Should Write Your Obituary Before You’re Dead

In Chapter 4 of The Unemployed Millionaire, I share this powerful story about a gentleman named Alfred from Stockholm, Sweden:

Although Alfred was tutored at home, he was mostly self-educated. He was an avid reader of literature and became fluent in several languages including English, French, Russian, German, and Swedish. More importantly, he also became a chemist.

Alfred soon began experimenting with nitroglycerin and received a Swedish patent for a detonator dubbed the “Nobel Lighter.” He soon set up a factory near Stockholm to manufacture nitroglycerin. Unfortunately, nitroglycerin is dangerous to handle and Alfred’s factory blew up in 1864, killing Alfred’s younger brother, Emil.

The explosion did not slow Alfred down, however. Within just a month, he organized other factories to manufacture nitroglycerin. Three years later, Alfred combined nitroglycerin with an inert substance that made the explosion safer to handle and store. This new, safer explosive was Alfred’s invention, which he called dynamite.

Despite being a pacifist, Alfred saw his invention used for war. In 1888, Alfred’s brother Ludvig died in France. When Alfred read the obituary in a French newspaper, his grief turned to dismay. Instead of reading his brother’s obituary, he found that he was reading his own obituary, which the newspaper had mistakenly printed!

“THE MERCHANT OF DEATH IS DEAD!” the headline proclaimed. Upon further reading, Alfred found that his obituary described him as a man who had simply gotten rich by making it easier  for people to kill each other.

Dismayed by what he had read, Alfred vowed that his real obituary would be far different than what the French newspaper had printed. Instead of a man who had become wealthy from the misery and suffering of others, Alfred decided his obituary would portray him as a man of peace who had used his wealth to benefit humanity.

When he died eight years later in 1896, Alfred had left more than $9,000,000 to fund awards for work that helped promote peace. You probably know Alfred best from the awards that are still given out today in his honor. They’re called Nobel Peace Prizes in honor of Mr. Alfred Nobel.

Alfred Nobel and 11-year old Maura’s “Just One Girl” film are proof that YOU matter and you do have the power to change the world for the better – no matter who you are or where you’re at in life.

How do you want to be remembered? Right now, you have the power to shape your own destiny and write your future obituary. What will it say? Only you can decide how you want your life to turn out.

  • Good morning Matt,
Thank you so much for sharing your time and your thoughts. I do belive that one person can make all the difference in the world. Everything has a ripple effect. It all starts with "One".

This was definately a great "step to reality". We all need to do our part and when a child let's you know that she has got it all in perspective, the adults need to do the same. I love her inspiration... The Rose at the End of her Driveway. We all need to look around, and don't miss the little things!

What a powerful message indeed! Sad that the majority of people live their lives based on the opinions of other people of them and make those opinions their reality, thus robbing the world of their true identity, which could have made life more unique than it already is.
A miollion thanks Matt for the inspiration you give so generously.

We all have this ingrained into our minds hearts and souls because we are all special in our own way for there is only one of you, me and every one on this planet so we are all so very special in this world and we are all no 1, for there is no one else like us in this whole wide world
    Keep smiling

This is an inspirational video, thanks Matt.

This proves that no matter whether you are young or old, able
or disabled, you can change the world for a better place to live
in if you put your heart and soul to do it.

Many big discoveries, inventions are started buy just one or 2 people.

Remember the wright brothers who invented airplane which changes
the way we move around the world.

How about the Hoyt family that inspire the world with their story
of a father and disabled son who competed together in marathons and triathlons
    across the country?

Their story touches fathers all around the world and inspire them to
take good care of their family and kids.

    Very very inspiring article.
It is better to do something to improve our lives than do nothing.
  • Jolo
The impact would be incredible if each person adopts that attitude. It all starts with you; with me.
  • Jolo
Awesome! The impact would be incredible if each person would adopt that attitude. It all starts with you; with me. The individual choices that you make makes the difference
  • Yes, one person can make difference. Matt you are one person and make big difference. So are many, many more 'one person' that make difference in the world. At the moment life seem to be so full of huge problems that are so overwhelming it take you breath away, but the knoledge that we all every one person can make the difference and it does not even need to cost anything, make you think all those problems are very small in comparison to our pover. It is up to every one of us.
  • Motivational Monday # 18 Maura
Maura you are a brave young lady and I admire the way you can express yourself. Young people like you have a lot of influence in the world. I would like for you to understand that the world is evolving not devolving and that things are continually getting better here on earth. I am concerned that at such a young age you are carrying so much fear.
I hope you will change your perception of the world and began to see the good rather than the bad. The answers to the negative things you see on the outside will be answered by going deep inside of yourself and aligning yourself with your soul. Allow yourself to be happy and you will attract more of that into your life and you will have an even more powerful influence on the world. Remember, "when you change the way you look at things the things you look at change". (Wayne Dyer) You will be surprised what one young lade can do to change the world when she projects happiness instead of fear.
    Light and love, Conrad

Yes - one can make a difference.
Greater love has no man than this; that he lay down his life for a friend.
He was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.
Though beaten by God Himself, he was bruised for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon him.
He bore the sin of many.
Yes - one can and did make a difference.
    Jesus did.
Yes -- one can make a difference.
Jesus said, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father, except by me.'
  • Hellen- London England
This is a very inspirational message, I will entitle it 'when one man made a difference'. God bless her heart.
  • Thanks Matt, much gratitude to you for this blog and the simple yet aspirational entitled accompanying book.

This post was a very timely reminder for me, as one of the other mentors in my life puts it constantly to us, we can all make it if we just "keep on keeping on". :)

I've met Matt Morris & he's one of the most genuine people i've ever met. Either that or a great actor! But I believe the former, & this website is a great way to show people in a variety of ways how YOU are the one who changes your life, regardless of any other host of other factors.

If something or someone bring your strength in your life, such as a motivational speaker or an organisation, remember that this 'thing's or person is only bringing out whatever already exists within you.

YOU are the person that produces, generates, creates & manifests this energy, no one else. Use whatever you have to use to find your strength, but then remember this strength only comes from within & so use it for yourself, and for good.

You make the choices to be whatever you want to be, because of the strength that either lies dormant & quiet, or explodes onto the world.
  • Jim Rohn sure changed the world. It might not have been obvious on the surface but his teachings will have sent ripples throughout the lives of people in the world that will continue to reverberate for generations.
  • Each of us can, and do change the world in our own small way.

Anyone who doubts that should watch the old movie "It's a Wonderful Life"
  • Absolutely, I do believe that one person can change the world!

"Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it's the only thing that ever has." Anne Mead

We're hoping to change the world with World Ventures... One person at a time!
