Motivational Monday #52

Video from KarmaTube

In 1992, British athlete Derek Redmond became one of most celebrated figures in Olympic history — despite never having won an event. It was the 400m semi-final of the Barcelona Olympics and Redmond, who was one of the sprinters tipped to win, tore a hamstring only minutes from the finish line. As emergency staff rushed to his aid, a weeping Redmond hobbled to his feet and began limping to the finish line — he knew he had to finish. His father ran out from the audience and held him until he made to the end, while an audience of millions stood up and gave him a standing ovation.

The video — a testament to the triumph of the human spirit — has since become immortalized in Nike and Visa commercials. How has this week’s Motivational Monday inspired you?

Hi Matt, My name is Liz Hoffman from New Zealand, I never miss any of your motivational Monday’s, and I have to thank you from the bottom of my hard and the man above for sending you my way.  With this clip i really cried because I have this terribly burning desire to finish my race even though I have been injured and I am not giving up.  I have been trying so hard to get hold of you book Unemployed Millionaire and I finally got it from book club in New Zealand.  I must tell you my friend thank you thank you for being you.  I believe there is a greater power that works in mysterious ways and he led me to you.  I received my book on Saturday 20 August and I am on page 165 already.  Love it love it Thank you Thank you.  Words does not explain to you how it makes me feel deep down inside.  One of my Dream List are to meet you in person one day so that I could thank you personally.  God Bless my friend.

To own your self-motivation is a “gift” that all heroes have discovered, the game of life has never been about winning, rather than giving your best efforts.

Hi Matt, My name is Tony from Hudson valley NY. This inspires me in ways that I can not explain. I do realize that I don’t have to go it alone and that when I need help all i have to do is ask. I love this video, every time I see it, it reminds me that no matter what you do, just finish, no matter if you win or lose. Finish your dream and you will find so much satisfaction in just finishing. OH, by the way if you don’t think this is and was a powerful video, ask people who Derek Redmond is and most people know, Ask who won the 400m gold medal in 1992 at the Barcelona Olympics, not many remember, They do remember a man with a goal and a desire to accomplish his dream. Don’t let anyone steal yours.

  • Valerie Fenech

Hi Matt! Thank you so much for this – it’s the perfect start to my Tuesday morning, as it was a sweet reminder of one of the very highlights of my experience with you in MBC Greece – I cried so much when you showed it to us there, and I had vowed there and then that I will not only continue this race, but finish it, with the help of people who believe in me and listen to my ideas, then implement them together. I’m so glad I met you Matt – not only once but twice! I continue to learn from you and look forward to buying and reading your book later on this year.

God bless you and may we cross paths again very soon!

  • April Grenier

This video made me cry both times that I watched it.  It made me think of my father, my heavenly Father who also picks me up and helps me when I am not able to run the race on my own.  I am so thankful that I have someone to pick me up when I am weak and help me run the race of life until the finish line.

  • Shirley H. Everett

Hi, Matt. this is Valerie from Singapore. I simply lose control of my cool. I wept, tears of regret. I give up easily….at times I don’t even believe that I could make it. I want to thank you wholeheartedly for the movie.

  • Murigi Mary

Oh Matt, what can I say.  I have shed a tear, what determination.  How many of us realise that we do not have to play victim, but we have the power within us to follow through on whatever we put our minds to.  Very inspiring.  Thank you, forever grateful.

  • Josie Cichockyj

I love this video. The will to ‘Finish the Race’ and determination to succeed is truly inspirational. For all those that want to quit take a look at Derek and question do I want it this much.  If not, should you be moving on to pastures new or being true to you dream!

  • Mary

Hello Matt, I am currently reading your latest book – The Art and Science of Success, and verily verily, I say it is exceptional. Anyone who has not grabbed a copy is missing out. Thank you for compiling all those remarkable, tried, tested and proven strategies for us.

What stood out for me in this video is how the father represented our Heavenly Father so well.  Just like this earthly human father came to the aid of his son, so does our Father in heaven come just on time to carry us through our life storms.  He has promised never to leave us alone.  We can therefore make bold decisions in life knowing our Father is keenly watching us and will defy all to come to our rescue. Never despair, never lose hope, never give up. Always remember, God is in the audience – watching you.

What a lesson!  Thank you again Matt.

  • Cutseybaby55

Beautiful, very inspirational – it just shows that even when we are down we should never give up

  • Kevin Thomas

    Hi Matt.
This is truly a most inspirational clip. You have “raised me up” to face the challenges I have on a daily basis. Thank man.

    Hey Matt,

Great Video.  Compassion allows to feel for your fellow man.  Tears, in this example are the tangible result.  Many people will be there for you.  Many people will be there through the good and the bad.  They will tell you it is ok if you fail, that it is ok if you don’t finish, that it is simply ok.  That however, does not give you permission to stop.  Only the individual decides to stop or to finish.  His father was protecting him as great fathers do but he also allowed him and helped him when the son said he was finishing.  Great example to never give up.  Than you.

This is great!  The word of God tell us that when we fall we shouldn’t continue to lie there but we wake up and continue. We also need some one to help us in time of distress. I am rearly challeged that i will always need someboby to lean on as well as i should be willing to give a helping hand to somebody elso. Thanks  you Mat for this reminder. Evangeline Mugoh, Kenya

Hi Matt this is Rose from Botswana I don’t know how many times I watched this video and I am always in tears, but motivated for the day. Redmond believed in himself and nothing was going to stop him from crossing the finish line not even the pain, and it is really a great lesson for us. Yes I did shed tears even today, and thank you Matt, you are a brother in need.

This parent remembered what a father is:
’To be there while  the son  completed the performance!”
as OUR FATHER does for any and all of us.
    Grateful for the message!

  • Donna S Moy

Hello Matt.. THANK YOU for sharing this video! It has got to be one of my most favorite that I’ve ever seen. The first time I had seen this video, it was played at either a company Promotion Day event or could it have been at MBC? I’m sorry I don’t recall precisely when I first saw it, but in either case.. there were tons of people in the audience (w the lights dimmed) and my eyes filled with tears hoping they won’t turn the lights back on too soon. Now.. even seeing this video over (and over) again from home… i am weeping & balling in tears! The perserverence and motivation to continue even while faced with the true adversity of real physical pain… is incredibly inspiring. Never Give Up !!!

This is an awesome story of a man who refused to give up despite all that came against him….very inspirational. He’s a winner in my eyes.

I often say to myself “Win no matter what” according to the lyrics of the song by DJ Khaled entitled “All I Do is Win!”.
