Lessons on Dancing and Leadership

Motivational Monday #19

It takes serious guts to be a leader and a dancer! For all you readers out there, here’s the full transcript – courtesy of Derek Sivers:

If you’ve learned a lot about leadership and making a movement, then let’s watch a movement happen, start to finish, in under 3 minutes, and dissect some lessons:

A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. But what he’s doing is so simple, it’s almost instructional. This is key. You must be easy to follow!

Now comes the first follower with a crucial role: he publicly shows everyone how to follow. Notice the leader embraces him as an equal, so it’s not about the leader anymore – it’s about them, plural. Notice he’s calling to his friends to join in. It takes guts to be a first follower! You stand out and brave ridicule, yourself. Being a first follower is an under-appreciated form of leadership. The first follower transforms a lone nut into a leader. If the leader is the flint, the first follower is the spark that makes the fire.

The 2nd follower is a turning point: it’s proof the first has done well. Now it’s not a lone nut, and it’s not two nuts. Three is a crowd and a crowd is news.

A movement must be public. Make sure outsiders see more than just the leader. Everyone needs to see the followers, because new followers emulate followers – not the leader.

Now here come 2 more, then 3 more.  Now we’ve got momentum.  This is the tipping point! Now we’ve got a movement!

As more people jump in, it’s no longer risky. If they were on the fence before, there’s no reason not to join now. They won’t be ridiculed, they won’t stand out, and they will be part of the in-crowd, if they hurry. Over the next minute you’ll see the rest who prefer to be part of the crowd, because eventually they’d be ridiculed for not joining.

And ladies and gentlemen that is how a movement is made!  Let’s recap what we learned:

If you are a version of the shirtless dancing guy, all alone, remember the importance of nurturing your first few followers as equals, making everything clearly about the movement, not you.

Be public. Be easy to follow!

But the biggest lesson here – did you catch it?

Leadership is over-glorified.

Yes it started with the shirtless guy, and he’ll get all the credit, but you saw what really happened:

It was the first follower that transformed a lone nut into a leader.

There is no movement without the first follower.

We’re told we all need to be leaders, but that would be really ineffective.

The best way to make a movement, if you really care, is to courageously follow and show others how to follow.

When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first person to stand up and join in. (© 2010 Derek Sivers)

There’s no doubt that most of my life I’ve wanted to be just like the first dancer, but it definitely takes courage to stand out from the crowd and be different. This is a great lesson in leadership, but my favorite take-away is the act of bold risk taking. Taking risks and being willing to act ridiculous is a necessary skill in a life worth living. I guess I just need to dance a little more . . . :)

Wow this is incredible lots of fun n excitement thats Network Marketing!!
Whats great about this is it reminds me of a great quote by the late Christopher (Superman) Reeve
“So many of our DREAMS at first seem Impossible, then they seem Improbable, and then when we Summon the Will, they soon become Inevitable.”

I absolutely love this video and we all can certainly learn a lot from this video when it comes to leadership itself. Thanks for sharing will retweet and share on facebook. Have a wonderful day!

To be a leader, you gotta hang your balls out there…

What a greta message to share. And as a bonus we get to see that Leadership does not need to depend on technique. The first dancer is nor the first followers clasify for dance olympics, nor does the camera operator clasify for an Oscar. But do we learn something valuable here? Do I feel encouraged? – How can we not whilst we feel leadership….?

It also shows that most sheep (I mean people) are more likely to follow something ridiculous because it is entertaining, than to follow something useful which can give them financial freedom ;-)

So if we are entertaining then we will have financial freedom ;-)

Come now Steve, all business and no pleasure makes one a real Scrooge type of character. Knew of a millionaire that was so stressed about protecting his money financial wealth and took his own life. He knew not how to seek some form freedom from thinking outside of the box. Your not going to take it with you so cut loose and do something ridiculous.

What an amazing video!! Just shows what people are capable of doing, must hone my leadership skills… actually lack of.. and start dancing amongst a group of strangers. Now that will be where it will all start to fall apart. Lack of self belief i think is the expression.

    Matt!

Dude I LOVE this video! It so reminds me of exactly how a network marketing team grows…it brought tears to my eyes…not from watching the “momentum” happen…but thinking about all of those in our industry who never get out there first, or even 2nd, 3rd, 4th…or 100th…they just sit there on the ground while they get overrun from the crowd…

That was simply astounding. I wonder if the actions of the first two people to follow, were motivated by ridicule, and if so, at what point would their ridicule change to appreciation and astoundment, as I’m sure many people did, as I did, who watched this incredible occurrence take place?

I’m interested to hear your opinions on that.

Loved the video Matt, and soooooooo right on with how to create the movement. One has to follow their heart and step out first rather then always waiting for someone else to step forward.

A simple childhood memory that made me wonder what the heck was wrong with wrong with others. We took a bus to the central school and had a wonderful time with classmates, as long as we followed the rules laid out. Our bus driver was one of those Crankshaft type characters that others mumbled and grumbled about, and wanted to see replaced. I decided to sit behind him each morning and get to know him and see if I could cheer him up. Long story short, he said some things about my sister who babysat for him that was way out of line. He then thought it was in his rights to keep us under his stern reporting eyes, yet thought nothing of breaking a rule to jeopardize our safety going to and fro on the bus.

Numerous ones were going to go to the office with me on the concern of our safety, yet when it came down to the crunch, I stood alone with Crankshaft and the Principal. Did I have to do some explaining to my parents, when they were told that I was not allowed to ride on the bus being a trouble maker, excluding what he said about my sister. So dad drove me for a few days, until I was called in later that week and given the placement of being the new safety guard on the bus / seeing the younger ones crossed the road safety at each stop. Having to sit up front with him each day and patrol the aisles when something was going haywire as they sometimes do, things did come around where he actually began to greet us with a smile and treat us like we were human rather then a bunch of young people that were out of control brats, which put me on the heroine leadership list of those who backed out and didn’t go to the appointment made with him and the Principal. I don’t recall ever having to put in an report on anyone, as I gave one warning and said next time I would, which dropped from his near daily reports on someone.

And the dancing, yes, totally awesome ! Nothing liberates our souls and relieves the stress and tension of bodies more then shaking a leg out there on the dance floor. When out with my daughters and their friends, we would all skip down the street / dancing and singing and turned a few heads of those driving by. Clap, laugh, sing …. as the joy within will spring forward like rushing waters down a river and nothing more exciting then that. My most fond memory and awakening was at my cousins wedding in my teen years. Near the end of the evening [my dad had a few drinks in him], and I was honored with the one and only dance I ever had with him. Right after that a fast dance came on and I was wondering why the heck they were wheeling a gal on to the floor. I was in for the biggest lesson of being liberated in the spirit. She swung her arms to the music and every time I looked over I was wondering if she was going to forget she was chair bound and jump up and start dancing with everyone else.

Just before I opened this email I was sitting here dancing and clapping to a CD, thinking about that video of that night running through my mind, so how delighted was I to see the video you selected for today … blessed as usual when receiving your emails. Life is so grand ….eh !

I love it! I learned a lot from watching that video. It doesn’t matter if you have to dance and look like a crazy guy for 5 seconds or half an hour, just do it with confidence and you own it! other people may ridicule you, but your confidence is so strong that their comments have ZERO effect. then finally, because the dancer has more conviction in why he’s dancing than the other have in why they don’t dance, they join in… One follower joins in and sets an example for others that its ok to join!

Thanks Matt, I learned a lot from this
