Motivation Tip #1: Why You Should Never Give Up
Last night, Devon and I piled the kids on the bed and watched The NeverEnding Story which I loved as a kid. It was produced in 1984 but still remains my favorite children’s movie.
You should watch it with your kids.
And if you don’t have kids, watch it with yourself 🙂
Too many lessons to cover them all here but I’ll cover a few that have been ringing in my head over and over since watching it…
The central character in Fantasia is a little boy named Atreyu.
Atreyu is a child warrior tasked as the only one capable of saving Fantasia from total destruction from “the nothing” and finding the cure for the childlike Empress who is dying.
He must go on this quest with no weapons and use nothing but his intuition and internal powers of perseverance, courage and determination.
He goes through the swamp of sadness, which in itself gives many lessons. His horse, who he loved dearly dies from losing all hope and getting consumed with sadness.
How many times have we seen others let their entrepreneurial dreams die because of losing hope?
At another point in the story, Atreyu is trudging through another swamp on a 10,000 mile journey to the Southern Oracle and is about to be killed when he is suddenly saved from Falkor the Luckdragon.
Falkor’s message to Atreyu?
Never give up and luck will find you.
I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve felt like all hope was lost. But because I kept moving forward and kept having faith, “luck” eventually found me.
Motivation Tip #2: Why You Should Continue to Look for Happiness and Self-Worth
At one point, Atreyu has to pass through the gates to the Southern Oracle. But watches as another warrior tries to pass but is shot down and killed.
Atreyu is told that the Sphinx flanking both sides of the gate “keep their eyes closed until those who hope to pass doubt their own worth. Fancy armor doesn’t help, the Sphinx can see straight into your heart.”
This hit me powerfully because one of the biggest barriers for me getting through the “gates of success” was my own lack of self-worth.
What I’ve come to realize is that fancy cars don’t help…
fancy watches don’t help… Big houses don’t help…
You can “fake it” all you want, but a lack of self-worth always shows up and prevents you from getting through the gates of success.
Nothing external is going to fix a lack of self-worth. That is a battle to be won on the inside.
Nothing I’ve purchased externally has ever made me feel as good as the investments in education I’ve made in making myself feel good.
Change is a door that can only be opened from the inside.
As long as you continue looking externally for happiness and self-worth, you will, I’m afraid, be on your own NeverEnding journey.
Lots of love,
