How to Find Your Purpose in Life
Let’s talk about being immortal and no, I’m not talking about living forever.
I’m talking about creating so much of an impact in your life that you are remembered far after you are gone. And unfortunately, most people don’t have that going on.
I remember back a few years ago, I got really excited about my family genealogy, so I hopped on to one of the online genealogy sites and started researching.
The farthest I was able to work it up was to my sixth great grandfather, not that far, right? They didn’t keep great records back then.
Come to find out, he was buried out in East Texas.
My kids had a camp out there one summer, so I thought I’d drive out and see if I can find the cemetery.
I finally found the cemetery. It took a little while. I had to stop and ask a few people and finally, someone knew where it was.
As I walked around, going grave to grave, there sat my sixth great grandfather, Thomas Morris.
I sat there looking at the grave which was kind of cool. This is my oldest known ancestor but it was also kind of sad because the online genealogy said nothing about him.
He Lived, He Died and Was Forgotten
In fact, there was nothing about any of my grandfathers or ancestors online.
I started thinking, “Man. I got no one in my family who’s been noteworthy, that left a mark after they were gone?
My sixth great grandfather lived, died, and was very quickly forgotten.
Not one time in my whole life had anyone in my family ever mentioned his name.
This was just one of those moments where I’m sitting there looking at his stone, and I’m thinking, “I hope this is not going to be my fate.”
It really inspired a higher level of motivation.
I mean, I’ve always been motivated, but this was on a deeper level.
The Thinnest Level of Motivation
There are three levels of motivation.
The first level of motivation is usually where people start.
It’s for money and things.
You want to go buy a nice car. You want to have a nice house.
Then maybe you want a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, or you want a yacht.
There’s nothing wrong with those things, it’s just the first level of motivation.
It’s the most shallow level of motivation.
I’m not one of those people that say, “Don’t go get a Ferrari.” If that motivates you, work like crazy to get a Ferrari so that you can realize it’s not that important.
I got a Ferrari and it’s kind of like an empty calorie goal.
I’d drive it around and everyone would look at me and ask what I do for a living. It was kind of cool but it wore off very quickly.
I realized I wasn’t motivated. I wasn’t going to move a mountain to have a nicer Ferrari or a nicer Lamborghini because it’s just surface motivation. It’s the shallowest level. Not shallow as in wrong, but shallow as in the thinnest level.
What’s deeper?
Deeper Motivation is Significance and Recognition.
People will do more for recognition and respect than they will for the money.
A lot of people deny that but any million dollar earner in Network Marketing that understands influence is going to tell you that recognition is always a bigger motivator.
People will do more to get the rank than they will the money for the rank because they want the recognition for the rank.
That’s true for me as well.
I’ve hit the top rank in my company three times and I hit it more.
My income did go up a little but my lifestyle didn’t really change.
It was more for the recognition.
That’s how we’re wired.
We want to be significant. We want people to look up to us and to be a good person.
It’s not that we just want significance to feed our ego, but if your ego tells you that you want to be a good person then I’m okay with you feeding that portion of your ego.
The Deepest Level of Motivation is Your Purpose
It’s your calling. It’s why God put you on this planet.
If I were to ask you why did God put you here, do you have a clear answer?
The answer is no for most people and they wonder why they struggle with motivation.
When I say, “Why did God put you on this earth”, they have no frickin’ clue.
That’s why you’re not motivated. That’s why you struggle with a lack of self internal motivation. It’s why you’re not naturally motivated.
No one is naturally motivated.
You think some people are just born and they’re this machine of motivation? No.
This is something we’ve got to figure out how to make work.
Figure Out What Motivates You
How do you figure out this motivation thing?
Well, go to the deepest level of motivation. Start with the shallowest.
If you’ve never had a fancy sports car and that’s what you want, by all means, go for it, but that’s not what’s going to motivate you long term to move mountains and become immortal.
What’s going to motivate you is getting very clear on why God put you on this earth.
I’m very clear. I know why God put me here.
He put me here to live up to the highest potential he has for me and to help other people live up to their highest potential, to enjoy peak experiences, and adventures around the world.
To make a positive impact in the lives of millions of people that leave a legacy of multigenerational love, success, wealth, and contribution from my family, to be a hero to my children.
That’s why he put me here.
It’s to help people live up to their highest potential.
Figure Out Your Purpose in Life
Why do I do videos and write blogs? Why am I naturally motivated to do these things?
It’s part of my calling and purpose. It’s why I’m here.
I couldn’t care less if someone thinks I’m an idiot for the messages I put out. I’m clear on my purpose. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. I’m going to follow my purpose.
When there are struggles and challenges, I am able to stay focused on my purpose which is making an impact in the world so that when I’m gone, my impact will outlive me.
So that my sixth great grandson or granddaughter will be able to look back and when they look up ‘Matt Morris’, they’re going to say, “Oh, he’s the one who wrote all those books.”
“He’s the one who helped over 50 people become millionaires. He’s the one that helped create this movement of human potential. He is the one that impacted the world. He’s the inspiration. He was my grandfather’s inspiration to do big things.”
That’s my future after I’m gone. That’s what I mean by becoming immortal.
Making An Impact
You may be listening to me going, “Well, yeah, but I’m afraid of people.” Congratulations. You can make a bigger impact than me.
“But I’ve got this handicap.” Congratulations. You can make a bigger impact than me.
Whatever your challenge is, that means you get to make a bigger impact because you’ve got a bigger challenge to overcome.
It took me five years to get to a full-time income as an entrepreneur. Five years and it sucked.
I hated it. I was so frustrated. I’d beat myself up all the time because I saw so many people who got started after me and pass me up.
“I got in network marketing.” And all of these people are advancing in rank and I’m stuck.
Year, after year, after year, I was stuck.
“What’s wrong with me? I’m never going to make it. I can never be as big as these other leaders.”
I use to write in all caps “HUGE NETWORKER” when I got new contacts because in my mind these people were so big I couldn’t relate to them.
It felt like I was never going to be as big as them because I didn’t have it in me.
That was my belief.
I knew I could get to a full-time income and earn six figures but I wasn’t going to be this multimillion dollar producer or be the number one earner in a company.
Your Struggles Create Purpose
I am a much better leader now because I struggled for five years.
Because I struggled for five years, it has allowed me to understand what it feels like to go through hell for a long period of time.
I know what it feels like to beat yourself up, bang your head against the wall, and be pissed off.
I know what it feels like to blame everyone.
Because of all of this, I can guide people through the process.
Whatever your obstacle is, whatever your challenge or excuse is, congratulations! That means you get to make a bigger impact if you don’t quit, if you keep going.
Your Path Doesn’t Determine Your Future Unless You Let It.
My advice is to adopt a contrary belief that says, “Because I suck so bad, this means I’m going to be way better than everyone else.”
I’ve seen so many people over the last 24 years in network marketing whose teams have grown to a million customers, have made ridiculous amounts of money, a billion dollars plus in sales, all that.
That’s great and all but I’ve seen so many amazingly charismatic individuals who become stuck at a level of success.
One person comes to mind. They’re so freakin’ charismatic, charming, eloquent and silver-tongued, you might call it.
Even though this person doesn’t have to work very hard to have a decent level of success, they have been stuck at that level of success for fucking years. Years!
I lapped them.
Years ago, they were ahead of me and I lapped them many times over. Why? I know what it’s like to struggle.
If you know what it’s like to struggle, get excited about your future because that means you’re going to be bigger than most people.
Those of you who are naturally like, “Oh man, I got it going on. I’m naturally charismatic. People like me. I have influence.” Beware. Beware of comfort.
The Road to Success vs The Road to Mediocrity
There are two roads. There’s a road to success and a road to mediocrity.
You’re either moving towards success or you’re moving towards mediocrity.
What happens is sometimes people find it fairly easy to get to a certain level of success so they park themselves over in the shoulder of comfort.
Comfort is the shoulder going to mediocrity.
If you stay in comfort too long, you get into complacency.
You’ve got to dig deeper into the level of motivation than just your level of comfort.
Why do I keep going? Why do I do what I do?
I could turn my phone off, not take another call and I’d be good.
I got investments that pay me money. However, I will keep going because I have a deeper level of motivation.
Don’t Become Complacent
I’m not comfortable just staying where I’m at.
I’m not comfortable with the level of impact I’ve made on this planet thus far.
That has me naturally motivated to go do more, to create more content like this, to have someone get a click it in their mind, and go “Holy shit. I’ve been missing this.”
This is why I fucked my life up. I’m not going to fuck it up anymore.
Now I’m going to go rock it to the top. That’s my desire. That’s why I do this thing.
I’ve already done well over a thousand videos. I’ll just do thousands more over my career.
I don’t want to retire. Retiring and not doing this would be outside of my purpose.
This is hopefully a wakeup call to you.
Find a Deeper Purpose
If you’re in that shoulder of comfort, how do you get out of comfort and stay out of complacency?
Find a deeper purpose.
Why did God put you here? What’s your core purpose in life? Figure it out.
Stop waiting to figure out your purpose.
Some people are like, “I’m waiting for God to tell me.”
God has never reached down and said, “Matt, your purpose is this.” Never.
I had to figure out what my purpose is on my own.
“What do I want my purpose to be? Is it in line with who I am and the values that I aspire towards?”
I came up with something that inspired me, and I decided that that’s why God put me here.
If you believe God is powerful, then you also have to believe that God makes us powerful enough to come up with our own purpose.
Don’t whine about a lack of purpose.
Create a Purpose That Inspires You and Live in it.
It may change and it may get bigger. It may completely change. You won’t know unless you live in a purpose today.
The way to success is a curvy road. You’ve got to live in it to understand if that’s really what you’re meant for.
Here’s your homework. Figure out what your purpose is. Write it out. Find something. Make up something that inspires you, live in it and take action on it.
