This morning I was up at 5am and by 5:10 out on the streets for a little over a mile run. As my feet were pounding the pavement, I reflected back on the day yesterday.
I must have had a dozen people reach out to me by either email or social media thanking me for my influence in their life in one shape, form or fashion.
I’ll be honest, it feels good.
Then I got to thinking about a shift I made many years ago that made a huge difference.
You see, I had a handful of heroes in network marketing who inspired me greatly and that made a great positive impact in my life. People like Dexter Yager and Bill Britt from my time in Amway… Mark Yarnell and Richard Brooke from their books… Tony Robbins from his books and audios.
They inspired me and it felt good to have that inspiration…
But no matter how much I got inspired by them, I never seemed to be able to have a breakthrough in my business.
When I met my mentor Wayne Nugent 20 years ago, he inspired me as well. But I think he realized that I was putting him on a pedestal and he read me a quote that really hit home…
“It is well to respect the leader. Learn from him. Observe him. Study him. But don’t worship him. Believe you can surpass. Believe you can go beyond. Those who harbor the second-best attitude are invariably second-best doers.”
Simple Ways to Inspire Yourself and Be Your Own Hero
Here’s what I got from it…
There’s nothing wrong with being inspired by other people but I needed to be my own greatest inspiration.
- I needed to motivate myself through my own actions.
- I needed to be my own hero.
So my question to you is this…
Do you inspire you?
If not, break out a pen and a journal and start writing down things that you can do that will inspire you. Things that will cause you to look up and admire yourself.
Then do those things.
Every day.
It might be waking up 30 minutes early to get a workout in, writing 1,000 words towards that book you’ve been putting off, making the calls you’ve been putting off, reading that book you haven’t read or learning something new.
When I decided to stop idolizing others and become my own greatest hero, that’s when I stepped into real power as a leader.
I remember like it was yesterday when I was driving back to Dallas from Austin (a 6-hour round trip) from a presentation and training I had done that night.
I had been pushing myself harder than I ever had for weeks. I was so tired because it was after midnight and I had a 7am coffee meeting the next morning.
But despite being so dead tired, I just started thinking about the effort I was putting and how, for the first time ever, I was doing everything it took to achieve my goals and dreams.
I got this incredible rush of adrenaline, filled with goosebumps and was overcome with a sense of pride I had never felt before.
For the first time…
I looked at myself…
…as my own hero.
So listen, my friend, I appreciate the accolades. I appreciate the gratitude. It sincerely means a lot.
But what I want more than anything is for YOU to inspire you.
Because when you start doing the things that make you a hero in your own mind, that’s when you’ll step into the power that is most certainly within you now.
Lots of love,
Matt Morris
