I have a confession to make.
Over the past few weeks, since the Coronavirus has put us all on lockdown, I haven’t been myself. In some ways I’ve been better… I’ve produced more content, written more blogs, done more zoom events, and my personal development is up so I’ve certainly grown.
But I’ve seriously slacked off in one major area of life which is core to who I am. I’m fessing up today because my behavior has been completely unacceptable.
I’ve been a slacker when it comes to my fitness. Yes the gyms were closed for a while. But I have a decent little home gym so I really have no excuse. A few days ago I decided enough is enough and have been back at it slinging iron.
You might know what it’s like when you start hitting it hard in the gym after taking some time off? I’m insanely sore all over. In fact, I’m so sore today I thought to myself… I deserve a day off!
Just as I justify taking the day off, I realize that voice…
It’s the force of mediocrity attempting to keep me in shackles.
You see, my friend, we have two opposite and opposing forces within us.
The Force of Mediocrity vs the Force of Power
Each of these powers has its own distinctive and equally powerful voice. When it comes to my fitness, unfortunately I’ve been listening to the voice of mediocrity.
I’ve given that voice a name… Saul.
Saul is a weak, whiney, and scared little man. Saul is a coward and would be content to live his life seeking out a pathetic existence in the land of the common man.
Whether I want to admit it or not, Saul is part of me. And unfortunately, every once in a while… I let Saul’s voice control me.
Accepting Saul as part of me might appear as weakness. But I can promise you, the exact opposite is true. By admitting, and accepting, that I have Saul within me (which we all do), it actually makes me powerful.
There is a great quote from The Art of War by Sun Tzu that says,
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
Part of your power comes from knowing that the greatest enemy is no outside force. Your greatest enemy will always come from within.
Because I’m strong enough to admit the force of mediocrity is within me, it allows me to shut his puny, pathetic ass up when he starts chirping in my ear.
Success Strategy to Fight the Force of Mediocrity
How do I defeat him? By bringing out the force of power that is within all of us.
My inner force of power is El Mateo…
El Mateo is a whirlwind of unstoppable power. El Mateo is like Zeus… the God of the sky who brings the lightning and thunder. El Mateo is a hurricane of strength and can impose his will over, and defeat, little ol’ Saul easily and effortlessly at any moment… I simply need to allow his voice to come out. You have your own version of Zeus inside you as well.
Understand, my friend, you have both the force of mediocrity and the force of power.
If you want to control these forces, I recommend you give them a name. The same way you get your dog to “sit, stay and come.” You call it by name.
When I want Saul to lay down, I call him by name. When I want El Mateo to come… and bring the thunder… I call him by name.
Today’s coaching may seem like quite the break from traditional coaching. But as you might have realized, I’m no average coach.
